A plane reported missing near Nelson has crashed.
The plane left the city at about 9.10am on Tuesday morning and was reported overdue just before midday.
Two rescue helicopters had been searching at the plane's last-known location north-east of Nelson.
In a statement, police said emergency services were now responding to a plane crash south of Castor Peak.
Police did not say how many people were reported to be on board.
"An update will be provided as soon as we are able," they said.
Flight tracking data on the website FlightRadar24 showed a Cessna Skyhawk taking off from Nelson Airport at 9.10am and flying into the hills near Whangamoa before its tracking data stopped.
Nelson Aero Club confirmed it was not one of their planes.
