Part of Auckland's Southern Motorway has been reopened after a serious crash in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Fire and Emergency NZ said two people were rescued after becoming trapped in a vehicle on the motorway between Ellerslie and Sylvia Park at 1.12am.

The NZ Herald is reporting it was a head-on crash between a car and a van.

The driver of one vehicle was taken to Auckland City Hospital in a critical condition, while the driver of the second was taken to hospital in a serious condition, police said.

Fire and Emergency said it responded to the incident with three crews from Ellerslie, Ōtāhuhu, and Mount Wellington.

A section of the southbound lanes was closed overnight, with southbound diversions in place at the Ellerslie-Panmure Highway off-ramp.

The Serious Crash Unit examined the scene overnight, and an investigation was now underway.
