A man is facing criminal charges after allegedly poaching animals on a farm in rural south Auckland.
Sergeant Michael Robinson said an Āwhitu landowner heard a firearm being used in the early hours of a morning in early September.
He said the landowner found a person he didn't know near his property and they left when challenged.
Police officers investigating the matter ended up executing search warrants at a Hamilton property where they found firearms and ammunition.
They arrested a 28-year-old and charged him with unlawful hunting, selling firearms and ammunition to unlicensed people and perverting the course of justice.
He has since appeared in the Hamilton District Court and is expected to reappear next week.
"Unlawful hunting in rural communities poses is not only a criminal offence, but it poses significant risks to public safety, property, livestock and wildlife," Sergeant Robinson said.
"There are specific firearms regulations to ensure the safe and lawful possession and transfer of firearms and ammunition. Those found breaching these rules will be held to account."
He said anyone who suspects unlawful poaching should call 111 immediately.
