A 24-year-old man has been arrested after he allegedly fired a gun during a dispute in Whangārei's central city.

Police say the incident occurred about 2am on Sunday in the Vine Street car park, in the city's main nightlife area.

No one was injured.

Detective Senior Sergeant Aaron Crawford said a tip-off led South Auckland police - backed up by the Armed Offenders Squad - to a property on Papakura's President Avenue last night.

The Kaipara man was taken into custody without incident, he said.

He was due to appear in the Manukau District Court today charged with discharging a firearm with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Crawford said police were still investigating what led to the shooting.

"Our enquiries so far lead us to believe that this was an isolated incident following a dispute. We won't tolerate reckless violence such as this in our community, and it's pleasing that we've been able to make an arrest in this case."

He urged any other witnesses to come forward.

"We're aware there were a number of people on Vine Street at the time the firearm was discharged, and we'd still like to speak with them as part of this investigation."
