Firefighters are battling a large scrub fire that is threatening two telecommunications towers in the Centre Hill area of Southland.

Six helicopters are combatting the blaze with monsoon buckets.

A seventh aircraft is directing the aerial attack, with a focus on "protecting the towers".

Fire and Emergency said the fire was burning through fine fuels and conditions on Sunday night were challenging because of strong winds.
