Investigations are underway into reports of an oil spill after a fire in the Auckland suburb of Penrose on Thursday.
The fire broke out Thursday afternoon at a Vector electrical substation, and large plumes of black smoke were seen across the city.
Auckland Council team leader compliance Kevin Reeve said its pollution unit was working with Fire and Emergency and the harbourmaster to figure out the extent of the oil spill and how to manage it.
"Once we've confirmed the extent of the discharge, we will be able to provide an update on the environmental monitoring required."
Vector said in a statement an investigation into the cause of the fire would be undertaken.
