Helicopter crews and firefighters are working to bring a large scrub fire under control in the Waiouru military zone.

Fire and Emergency shift manager Becca Jennings said fire crews responded to the blaze on the Central Plateau about 10.15am on Monday.

It appeared to be a continuation of a fire from the previous day that had since escalated, she said, and the flames had spread to an area about 400x400 metres by early Monday afternoon.

Its cause was unknown.

Three helicopters and nine fire trucks were at the scene late on Monday afternoon.

The blaze was at a fairly isolated area. There had been no reports of injuries and the fire did not pose a threat to the Desert Road or to buildings in the area, Jennings said.

Motorists travelling on the Desert Road - State Highway 1 have captured footage of large plumes of smoke just south and north of the Waiouru township.
