Fire engulfs large building in Christchurch

Fire crews are battling a blaze that's engulfed a large building near central Christchurch.

Emergency services were called to the fire at a single-storey building on Brisbane Street in Sydenham about 11.30am on Wednesday.

Fire and Emergency says the 40 by 20 metre building is fully involved in fire but all people are accounted for.

There are multiple fire crews on the scene and more on the way.

Fire and Emergency says work is underway to control the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby building.

People are urged to avoid the area and close their windows if they are sensitive to smoke.
