Urgent repairs are under way as a burst water main interrupts supplies to residents in Titahi Bay in Porirua, north of Wellington City.
Crews have located the damaged section of pipe supplying the suburb and water is being used from local reservoirs, water provider Tiaki Wai says.
It warns that the reserve is likely to be depleted soon and Titahi Bay residents would then be without water.
Repairs should be completed by 2pm, a Tiaki Wai spokesperson said, although that timeline could change as the work progresses.
Water tankers have been requested to support residents during the outage and information on their locations should be available soon.
A statement from Tiaki Wai said it appreciated the community's patience while crews completed the repair and restored water services safely.
"Residents are encouraged to conserve any remaining water and keep an eye on the Tiaki Wai facebook page for the latest updates," it said.
