A child has been critically injured after an assault by an unknown man at a central Auckland park this afternoon.

Hato Hone St John said two people were taken to hospital after the incident in Myers Park at 4.45pm.

One has been taken to Starship Children's Hospital with critical injuries.

An area around the children's playground was cordoned off by multiple police officers.

Police said a 20-year-old man was taken into custody over the assault.

Inspector Jim Wilson said the man was not known to the victim.

Wilson said both the victim and offender required medical treatment.

"This was an isolated incident, and there is no ongoing risk to the public."

St John sent two ambulances to the scene, as well as a rapid response vehicle and an operations manager.
