File. A Nigerian Policeman
Two police officers have been detained at the Zone 11 Police Headquarters over alleged brutality and the invasion of students’ hostels at the Federal Polytechnic, Ede, Osun State, on Wednesday.
The Zonal Public Relations Officer, Tunji Ojedele, confirmed the development to our correspondent on Thursday, stating that the two officers identified by the victims had been detained for further investigation.
“The officers involved have been detained for further investigation. Two of them were identified by the suspects,” Ojedele said.
Saturday PUNCH gathered that the development followed a complaint by the National Association of Nigerian Students, South-West, which accused officers attached to the Cybercrime Unit of the Zone 11 Police Headquarters of brutalising students during a hostel raid.
No fewer than 16 students were arrested during the operation.
The NANS South-West Coordinator, Josiah Adeyemo, in a statement on Wednesday, described the conduct of the officers as disturbing and inconsistent with the principles of professional policing.
Following the complaint, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 11, Osogbo, Bassey Ewah, ordered the release of the arrested students and an investigation into the matter.
