Soldiers rescue nine kidnap victims in Kebbi, recover 108 livestock

Troops of the Joint Task Force North-West, Operation Fansan Yamma, have rescued nine kidnapped victims and recovered 108 livestock during separate operations in Danko-Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

The operations, conducted by troops of Sector 2 around Danko, Sabon Tunga and Binoni communities, also led to the recovery of 34 cows and 74 rams.

The military disclosed this in a statement, saying the troops responded to a distress call over the invasion of communities in the Danko general area by suspected bandits, who reportedly kidnapped residents and rustled cattle.

According to the statement, the troops immediately mobilised to the affected area and engaged the suspected bandits in a gun battle, forcing them to flee and abandon their captives.

It said, “Following the encounter, the troops rescued two kidnapped victims identified as Barbuga Bawashe, 26, and Barka Dakaji, 61.

“The troops also recovered 34 cows and 74 rams during the operation.”

In a related operation on the same day, troops rescued seven other kidnapped victims in Sabon Tunga and Binoni villages.

The military said the victims, who had reportedly spent several months in captivity, escaped from their abductors amid sustained military operations in the area.

The rescued victims were identified as Muhammad Dogonta, 60; Zakari Yahu, 32; Basara Sheu, 10; Adam Shehu, 12; Hatsat Umar, 14; Albaria Hamsu, 12; and Yehusa Lawali, 35.

The statement added that the victims had been handed over to the District Head of Unashi for onward return to their families.

The military said the operations formed part of ongoing efforts by troops of Operation Fansan Yamma to sustain pressure on criminal elements and restore security across the North-West.

Kebbi State has faced recurring attacks by armed bandits, including kidnappings, killings and cattle rustling, particularly in communities bordering neighbouring states.

The security challenges have prompted sustained military operations in the North-West, where troops have continued to target armed groups and rescue abducted residents.
