The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government to rename the Federal University, Wukari, Taraba State, after a former Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (retd.), in recognition of his contributions to national development.
The resolution followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by Gaza Gbefwi, Mark Useni and Ayuba Dampar during plenary on Wednesday.
Leading the debate on the motion, Gbefwi highlighted Danjuma’s contributions to Nigeria through military and public service, philanthropy, and support for education, healthcare and vulnerable communities.
He said, “The House recognises that naming the university after him would honour his contributions to national development and preserve a legacy of service for future generations.”
Consequently, the House, presided over by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, urged the Federal Government to rename the institution TY Danjuma Federal University, Wukari (TYDFUW), subject to the necessary amendment of its enabling Act.
It also mandated the House Committee on University Education to engage relevant stakeholders and facilitate the legislative measures required to give effect to the proposed renaming.
Established in 2011, the Federal University, Wukari, is one of Nigeria’s federal institutions established to expand access to university education, promote research and contribute to national development.
Danjuma, a retired general and indigene of Taraba State served as Chief of Army Staff from 1976 to 1979 and later as Minister of Defence from 1999 to 2003. Beyond his military and political career, he has been involved in philanthropic activities, particularly through the TY Danjuma Foundation, which supports initiatives in health, education and community development.
The proposed renaming is, however, subject to the completion of the required legislative and administrative processes before it can take effect.
