The National Youth Service Corps in Jigawa State has commended Governor Umar Namadi for fulfilling promises made to the scheme while renewing its appeal for the provision of a promised 250KVA generator to address the power crisis at its permanent orientation camp.
The appeal comes amid inadequate electricity supply at the General Yakubu Gowon NYSC Orientation Camp, Fanisau, Dutse, due to the absence of electricity supply from the Kano Electricity Distribution Company in the area.
PUNCH Online findings show that the power outage is hampering critical camp activities, including water pumping and other daily operations.
Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony of the 2026 Batch C, Stream II corps members held at the camp on Friday, the Jigawa State NYSC Coordinator, Mohammed Baba, renewed the appeal.
Baba said the management had presented its demands to the governor during his recent visit to the camp a few weeks ago, noting that the challenges were affecting the smooth running of activities.
He said the governor began fulfilling his promises within a week of the visit.
According to him, new ceiling fans have been installed in the multipurpose hall, while the renovation of two staff hostels is ongoing.
However, he said electricity supply remained a major challenge, as the 150KVA generator provided was inadequate to power the entire camp.
“We express our profound gratitude to His Excellency for fulfilling his promises made during his last visit to the camp,” Baba said.
He added, “The generator that was brought does not have the capacity to take the whole camp. We are waiting with deep anticipation for the promised 250KVA generator.”
Addressing the 2,100 corps members deployed to the state, Baba urged them to embrace discipline, patriotism and selfless service as they took the oath of allegiance.
He said the three-week orientation course was designed to prepare them physically, mentally and socially for the service year.
The coordinator also urged them to participate actively in camp activities and take advantage of the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme.
He further advised the corps members to remain security-conscious and adhere to guidelines issued by the NYSC and security agencies.
Responding, Governor Namadi, represented by his deputy, Aminu Usman, congratulated the corps members on their deployment to Jigawa.
“The government is committed to the welfare of corps members and the development of the NYSC scheme in the state,” Usman said.
He assured them that the state government would provide the promised 250KVA generator to the Fanisau camp soon.
“We will continue to support the scheme with all necessary assistance for the accomplishment of its objectives,” he added.
Earlier, 2,100 corps members deployed to Jigawa State were administered the oath of allegiance by Justice Amina Dahiru, representing the state Chief Judge.
Our correspondent reports that the event was attended by heads of security agencies, traditional leaders, senior government officials and other stakeholders in the state.
