The Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has presented cheques totalling ₦12.1m to families of deceased officers of the command under the Group Life Assurance and IGP Family Welfare Scheme.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday by the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib.
The presentation took place at the command headquarters in Bauchi.
Habib said the gesture was in line with the welfare-driven leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu.
He explained that the command received 36 cheques amounting to ₦12,136,940.60 from the Insurance Unit of the Department of Finance and Administration, Force Headquarters, Abuja.
The cheques, comprising benefits under the Group Life Assurance and IGP Family Welfare schemes, were presented to the next of kin and beneficiaries of officers who died in the line of duty.
Speaking during the presentation, Aliyu described the gesture as a demonstration of the IGP’s commitment to the welfare of police personnel and their families, even after their death.
He said, “This gesture demonstrates the unwavering commitment of the Inspector-General of Police to the welfare of our personnel and their families, even after death.
“The Force will continue to prioritise the prompt settlement of entitlements to cushion the pains of bereaved families and encourage serving officers to discharge their duties with dedication and courage.”
Aliyu urged the beneficiaries to judiciously utilise the funds for the wellbeing and education of the families left behind.
He said, “I urge you to make judicious use of these funds for the wellbeing and education of your families. The command remains committed to supporting you at all times.”
The CP also charged officers and men of the command to remain loyal, disciplined and committed to their duties.
He stressed, “The Force will never abandon the families of our fallen heroes. I therefore urge all officers and men to remain loyal, disciplined and committed to duty.”
The statement added that some of the beneficiaries, who spoke on behalf of others, expressed gratitude to the IG and the commissioner for the timely intervention.
They described the gesture as “a source of hope and succour” to their families, adding that the financial assistance would help address some of the challenges associated with losing their loved ones.
The beneficiaries also appreciated the police leadership for remembering the families of officers who died in the line of duty.
The Group Life Assurance and IGP Family Welfare schemes provide financial benefits to eligible next of kin and beneficiaries of police officers who die in service.
The payments are intended to support bereaved families following the loss of their loved ones.
