Nigerian-born interdisciplinary artist, Damilola Makinde, is combining music, theatre and spirituality in a creative journey that has seen him explore human experiences through different forms of artistic expression.
Popularly known as The Musical Being, he draws inspiration from themes such as love, grief, longing, personal resilience and faith, incorporating these experiences into his musical compositions and stage performances.
His music blends contemporary gospel influences with traditional Christian elements and acoustic sounds, offering reflections on everyday human experiences.
In an interview with Sunday Scoop, the artiste discussed his approach to music as a medium for exploring the human condition, noting that emotional authenticity remained a common thread across his different creative expressions.
Beyond music, Makinde has also been making waves in theatre in the United States, where he recently portrayed Defence Attorney George Shearer in Luis Valdez’s civil rights drama, Zoot Suit, staged at the Los Angeles Mission College Theatre.
The role, traditionally played by white actors, offered him an opportunity to explore the racial and social themes underpinning the production.
The three-week production reportedly enjoyed a sold-out run and earned Makinde an Irene Ryan Acting Award nomination, his second recognition for the award.
His performance further highlighted his versatility and ability to move between musical compositions and theatrical productions, including works with social and political themes.
Some of his viral releases have reportedly garnered more than one million views, further expanding his reach and engagement with audiences.
Through his blend of faith-inspired music, theatrical performances and independent creative choices, Makinde continues to explore the possibilities of artistic expression while carving a distinct identity across the entertainment landscape.
