The Co-convener of the Niger Delta Blue Economy Investment Summit, Uche Igwe, has urged state governors to invest in vessel procurement and inland water transportation to reduce transportation costs in coastal and riverine communities.
Igwe, a blue economy expert, made the call in a statement issued on Thursday after visiting the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy in Abuja on Wednesday, where his team held discussions with the Technical Adviser to the Minister, Prof. Busayo Fakinlede.
He noted the growing investments by state governments in the establishment of airlines, urging governors to extend similar investments to water transportation to ease the difficulties faced by residents of riverine communities.
According to him, Nigeria has significant potential for inland water transportation, which could be harnessed through investments in modern vessels and ferry services.
“Nigeria has about 10,000 kilometres of navigable inland waterways across 28 states, which are suitable for water transport development.
“Our state governors can invest in the procurement of vessels to phase out wooden commercial boats in favour of fibre-reinforced plastic and aluminium boats.

“These investments will expand ferry networks and reduce the cost of logistics for moving agricultural produce, solid minerals and commuters across the country,” he said.
The expert also expressed concern over recurring boat accidents on Nigerian waterways, which he attributed partly to the use of poorly equipped wooden boats, resulting in the loss of life.
He identified opportunities to improve trade between states, citing the potential of connecting riverine communities such as Agenebode in Edo State and Idah in Kogi State through improved water transportation services.
“There are several communities in the Niger Delta that are only accessible by boat, especially now that political campaigns are heating up. We need investments in water transport urgently,” he added.
Also speaking, Philemon Oghenedoro Adjekuko, who accompanied Igwe on the visit, said investment in inland waterways would reduce road congestion and create employment opportunities through boat building and marine tourism.
Adjekuko also urged the Federal Government to invest in dredging and channel enhancement to improve navigation along inland waterways.
