The Imo State Independent Electoral Commission has announced Saturday, November 14, 2026, as the new date for the postponed local government council elections across the 27 local government areas of the state.

The announcement was contained in a press release signed by the Chairman of the Commission, Charles Ejiogu, following consultations with critical stakeholders, including the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) and registered political parties, on Tuesday in Owerri.

According to the commission, the decision followed a stakeholders’ meeting held over the weekend, at which participants collectively urged ISIEC to announce a new election date as soon as possible.

The election was initially scheduled for September 26, 2026, but was postponed after some members of the Inter-Party Advisory Council approached the judiciary to seek an extension of the electoral timetable.

ISIEC subsequently rescheduled the poll to November 7 but postponed it again on October 31 following consultations with political parties and other stakeholders, without announcing a new date at the time.

The commission explained that the earlier proposed date of November 7, 2026, was considered unrealistic, necessitating the rescheduling of the exercise to November 14.
