Four persons have died while another sustained injuries in a road accident along the Awka–Enugu Expressway, opposite the Old Government House, Awka, Anambra State.

The accident occurred in the early hours of Monday when a Toyota Camry carrying five male adults reportedly veered off the road into a drainage, hit a culvert and somersaulted.

The Sector Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Anambra State Command, Margaret Onabe, disclosed this in a statement on Monday.

According to the statement, the injured victim was evacuated to a hospital for medical attention.

It added that before the arrival of the FRSC rescue team, the victims had been taken to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Awka, where three were confirmed dead and their bodies were deposited in the mortuary.

The fourth victim was later taken to Apex Hospital, Awka, where he was also confirmed dead.

The Sector Commander, Corps Commander Bridget Asekhauno, cautioned motorists against excessive speeding, particularly during the early hours when visibility could be reduced.

She urged drivers to obey speed limits, maintain control of their vehicles and ensure that safety devices, including approved speed-limiting devices, were functional.

The FRSC also reminded motorists that speeding reduces reaction time and increases the severity of road crashes.

“All road users are therefore urged to prioritise safety and exercise maximum caution while travelling. Road Safety is a Shared Responsibility,” she added.

In a similar incident in August, nine people were burnt beyond recognition while eight others sustained varying degrees of injuries in a road crash near Zangoro Village along the Bauchi–Maiduguri Federal Highway.

The FRSC said the crash occurred at about 11.20pm on a Monday and was reported to the corps five minutes later.
