Fleetwood Town knocked Arsenal out of the Carabao Cup after winning 5-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in their fourth-round tie at Highbury Stadium on Tuesday.
Aaron Loupalo-Bi gave the League Two side a shock lead after 21 minutes before Viktor Gyokeres equalised early in the second half.
Arsenal created several chances to win the match in normal time but failed to find a decisive goal.
The Gunners converted their first three penalties through Martin Odegaard, Kai Havertz and Gyokeres, while Harrison Neal, Ronan Coughlan and Will Davies scored for Fleetwood. Andy Cannon converted the hosts’ fourth kick before Fleetwood goalkeeper Jay Lynch saved Bruno Guimaraes’ effort to put his side on the brink of victory.
Conor Haughey then converted Fleetwood’s fifth penalty, sending the home fans into celebration and booking the League Two side’s place in the quarter-finals.
Arsenal’s evening was further complicated when teenager Max Dowman was sent off following a confrontation with Neal late in the match.
“Following our trip to Fleetwood, we are back in Premier League action, taking on Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, November 1 at 4.30pm.
“We then play our third away match in a row, heading to Slavia Prague in the UEFA Champions League,” a post match report on the club website noted.
