Chukwueze begins rehab after hip surgery

Super Eagles winger Samuel Chukwueze

Super Eagles winger Samuel Chukwueze has returned to Italy to begin his rehabilitation after undergoing successful surgery on a ruptured tendon in his left hip, with his return to action potentially delayed until 2027, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

AC Milan confirmed the development in a statement, revealing that the operation was performed in London by Professor Ernest Schilders in the presence of the club’s doctor, Dr Stefano Mazzoni.

“AC Milan announces that Samuel Chukwueze has undergone surgery in London to repair a ruptured tendon in the tensor fascia latae muscle in his left hip. The surgery, performed by Prof. Ernest Schilders in the presence of Dr. Stefano Mazzoni, was a complete success.

“The footballer will return to Italy, where he will begin his rehabilitation process,” the club said.

However, the Nigerian’s recovery could take longer than initially anticipated, with Gazzetta dello Sport reporting that he may not be ready to resume training by December.

Although Milan have not provided an official return date, reports following the injury had suggested that the winger could be sidelined until 2027.

Chukwueze had enjoyed an encouraging start to the 2026/27 campaign before the injury disrupted his progress, making seven league appearances and providing two assists, while also featuring once in the Europa League.

Chukwueze joined Milan from Villarreal in the summer of 2023 but struggled to establish himself at the club before moving to Fulham on loan last season.

The winger made 23 Premier League appearances for the London club last season, scoring three goals and providing four assists while forming a strong partnership with fellow Nigerians Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey.

He returned to Milan after Fulham opted against activating the €26m purchase option included in his loan agreement.

Since his return to Milan, he has grabbed the renewed opportunity to prove himself under Reuben Amorim.
