Nigerian Correctional Service
The Nigerian Correctional Service has confirmed that all inmates being conveyed to court were safely returned to the Maximum Security Custodial Centre, Port Harcourt, following an attack on their transport vehicle along Aba Road in Rivers State.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, in the Oil Mill Market area, when the vehicle conveying inmates and correctional personnel reportedly encountered a traffic holdup and was allegedly attacked by some individuals.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Service Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent of Corrections, J.N. Osuji, said members of the armed escort team fired warning shots into the air in an attempt to repel the attackers and protect the inmates.
The service, however, expressed concern over the fatal incident and sympathised with the family of the victim and others affected.
“The service expresses sympathy to the family of the victim and all those affected by this incident,” the statement read.
The NCoS condemned the attack on the vehicle, warning that such actions endangered lives, threatened public safety and obstructed the lawful discharge of official responsibilities.
“The service strongly condemns the attack on the vehicles conveying inmates and personnel on legitimate national assignment,” it stated.
It urged members of the public to exercise restraint, respect law enforcement operations and refrain from actions capable of escalating tense situations.
The service also disclosed that relevant security authorities were investigating the incident to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack and determine responsibility in accordance with the law.
It pledged to cooperate fully with the appropriate authorities to ensure that the matter was addressed through due process.
“The Service will cooperate fully with the appropriate authorities to ensure that the matter is addressed through due process,” Osuji said.
Reassuring the public of its commitment to security, the NCoS said it remained focused on ensuring the safe custody of inmates, protecting its personnel and maintaining public safety while carrying out its statutory responsibilities.
The service appealed to residents to remain calm and allow the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the incident.
