Health officials in Durham Region are advising the public about a possible exposure to measles after a local unimmunized child who recently returned from travel internationally tested positive for the virus.

Once predominantly a childhood disease affecting children aged one to five, measles is now being reported across age groups, including among fully vaccinated individuals and infants below nine months, who are not yet eligible for routine measles vaccination

Children and teenagers make up almost 60 percent of confirmed cases.

Gov. Kathy Hochul said that the death in Lewis County reflected eroding vaccination levels. The state is experiencing a significant outbreak of the viral illness.

A child died in Lewis County associated with the ongoing measles outbreak, health officials said.

So far this year, the state has reported 178 measles cases.
