Wind energy generation in Tamil Nadu from April to September this year was almost the same as last year.

According to data shared by the Indian Wind Power Association, wind evacuation in the State during the first six months of the current financial year (April 2026 to March 2027) was 12,256 million units. This is almost 16.16% of the total electricity consumed (76,472.44 million units) in the State during this period. Between April and September last year, the wind energy generated was slightly higher at 12,360 million units and it constituted 17.87% of the 69,155 of total energy million units consumed during these months.

K. Ilango, vice-chairman of the Association, told The Hindu that with solar energy installations increasing rapidly compared with wind mills, evacuation of solar energy is going up. This may be a reason for the slightly lower wind energy generation this year during the peak windy months in Tamil Nadu. However, wind energy generators, especially those producing wind power for captive use have no complaints regarding evacuation this year.

N. Pradeep, secretary of the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Coimbatore, said the winds are expected to continue till December and the total generation is likely to be less than 10 % lower than the annual average generation in the State. Winds this year during the peak season were slightly lower than last year in some areas.

Mr. Ilango added that capacity of wind turbines today are between 2.1 MW and five MW and the cost is almost ₹9 crore for a MW, which is far higher than solar energy panels. Hence, installation of solar energy systems is growing rapidly. The wind energy generation spread in the State has extended for a longer period now, thus increasing the scope of wind energy generation.
