A herd of wild elephants was seen roaming in paddy fields at Kudigere, Nadavalli Sampalli and neighbouring villages in Sagar taluk, leaving residents in shock.
Villagers spotted five elephants raiding the crops. They recorded videos and alerted Forest Department officials. Residents said they had not seen elephants in the area in recent memory.
The department has begun efforts to drive the animals back into the forest. Officials have appealed to residents to remain cautious and cooperate with the staff during the operation.
Senior officials said the area falls on a route the elephants use regularly, and that they tend to visit the region when paddy is ripe. Residents, however, said they had not seen elephants there for several years.
