Sceneis the scene this Deepavali in Tamil Nadu. Tamil star Suriya’s upcoming film, Scene, directed by Malayalam filmmaker Jithu Madhavan, has single-handedly taken on the Ramayanastorm down South, becoming one of the most anticipated releases this Deepavali weekend.
But what is the whole hype surrounding this Deepavali release all about?
The year of The One
The biggest expectation for the film is whether it will become a hat-trick of hits for Suriya at the box office in 2026. With Karuppu, Suriya became a saving grace for Tamil cinema during a devastatingly poor first half of the year, while Vishwanath & Sons offered a refreshing detour from the gore- and action-heavy films we have been getting from the industry's top stars. And now, with Scene, Suriya might just as well claim the throne as one of the few modern-day stars to deliver three hits in a calendar year. Additionally, Scene is also set to feature Suriya as a cop. And we all know what happens when Suriya takes charge. All hail ‘The One’.
Welcome back, Nazriya Nazim
It’s been 12 years since Nazriya Nazim last appeared on the big screen in Tamil cinema. After 2013’s Raja Rani, Nazriya was one of the most promising young female leads in Tamil cinema, and everyone expected her to make big moves to the top. However, after her wedding in 2014 to Malayalam star Fahadh Faasil, Nazriya took a long hiatus from Tamil cinema, with Thirumanam Enum Nikkah as her last release. Even in Malayalam, the actor has been quite choosy with her roles, though her scene-stealing turn in the Telugu film Ante Sundaraniki came as a sweet surprise for fans. And now, with Scene, Nazriya is eyeing a comeback to Tamil cinema.
Kollywood Times for Naslen
The craze young Tamil women have for Naslen has to be studied. Since 2024’s Premalu, Naslen has enjoyed a tremendous following across southern states, and with Scene, the Mollywood Times star is finally making his Tamil debut. However, that’s not particularly why Naslen fans might turn up to the theatres this Deepavali. With Scene, Naslen is shedding his chocolate-boy image by playing a serial killer, in what might be one of the first negative roles of his career. Talk about making an entrance!
The ‘Jithu’ Jilladi
No, we are not talking about the song from Theri. One of the key highlights of Scene is that it is helmed by Malayalam filmmaker Jithu Madhavan, a filmmaker whose previous two films, Romancham and Aavesham, got tremendous reception in Tamil Nadu. Jithu’s knack for humour and the hangover of watching Fahadh play the quirky gangster Ranga are enough promotion for Scene.
FDFS mania returns to Tamil Nadu
Open any ticketing platform on your device, and you will see a surprise. Yes, the early morning shows are back in Tamil Nadu. Scene will be one of the first films to enjoy six shows a day. This comes after the Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday announced that theatres across the State could now screen newly-released Tamil films for up to six shows a day, from 6 a.m. to 2.30 a.m. the following day, for one week from the date of release. This is the news cinema fans who know the allure of the early morning shows had been waiting for. It’s going to be a Scene festival at the theatres.
Ready-ah ‘Socksee’?
Content creator ‘Lungiboys’ Rajpriyan has played a pivotal role in Scene, while YouTuber Dravid Selvam of Parithabangal fame has penned the dialogues. If you have seen their sketches on social media, you know what to expect.
From the trailer, Scene seems to be a rather quirky investigative drama. Jithu’s frequent collaborator, music composer Sushin Shyam, is making his Tamil debut with Scene. Vineeth Augustian is the cinematographer, Ashwini Kale is the production designer, and Ajmal Sabu is the editor. Chethan D’Souza serves as the stunt choreographer. Suriya and Jyotika produce Scene under their Zhagaram Studios and 2D Entertainment banners.
