A 46-year-old man was hacked to death by an armed gang at Poothurai near Auroville in Villupuram district on Monday night.
The victim was identified as Rajendra Kumar, alias ‘Seizing’ Kumar of Jeevanandapuram in Puducherry. He had a few cases pending against him.
According to police, Rajendra Kumar had travelled by car with his friends to Poothurai, where they were consuming liquor. A gang allegedly tracking his movements attacked him with sharp weapons and fled the scene.
On receiving information, police from the Gorimedu and Auroville police stations reached the spot, as the incident occurred near the inter-State border with Puducherry. After establishing that the area fell within the jurisdiction of Auroville police limits, the body was retrieved and sent to a private medical college and hospital at Kalapet.
A case has been registered and further investigations are on.
