The Chennai Division of the Southern Railway has stepped up security and surveillance at railway stations and on trains ahead of Deepavali, urging passengers not to carry firecrackers, inflammable substances or other dangerous articles.

Railway officials warned that carrying firecrackers on trains or onto station premises could pose a serious fire hazard, particularly amid the festive rush, endangering passengers and railway personnel. Violators will face legal action under the Railways Act, 1989, including imprisonment of up to three years, a fine or both, depending on the applicable provision.

The Railway Protection Force (RPF) has intensified checks using explosive detection equipment and sniffer dogs to prevent the transportation of prohibited and hazardous materials. CCTV surveillance has also been strengthened, and special teams have been deployed to prevent passenger-related crimes and respond to security concerns.

Additional RPF personnel have been deployed at entry and exit points, platforms and other crowded areas to regulate queues, manage crowds and enhance security. Major stations, including Chennai Central, Chennai Egmore, Perambur, Tambaram, Chennai Beach, Mambalam and St. Thomas Mount, are under heightened surveillance.

Railway officials have urged passengers to travel only with permitted luggage and report suspicious baggage or activities to the RPF, Government Railway Police (GRP), ticket-checking staff or station authorities. Passengers can also contact railway helpline 139 for assistance.
