The fever outbreak among girl students at Sivannapeta Gurukul School in Kurupam mandal of Parvathipuram Manyam district is suspected to be due to post-cyclone viral infections, according to a report submitted by Director of Public Health R. Venkataramana to State Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav.

As per the report, 71 girl students were affected by fever, of whom 30 have recovered completely. Currently, 38 students are receiving treatment and medical supervision in a separate room at the hostel, while three others have been shifted to the Kurupam Community Health Centre for better medical care. The District Medical and Health Department confirmed that the health condition of all the affected students was stable and that the situation was completely under control.

No fever cases have been reported in Kurupam village, located about 1 kilometre from the hostel. The students admitted to the Kurupam Community Health Centre are also stable, officials said.

One student tests positive for malaria

The school has a total strength of 559 girl students, of whom 516 were present. Rapid Diagnostic Tests (RDTs) were conducted on all the students who attended school. One student tested positive for Plasmodium falciparum malaria, while the remaining 515 tested negative.

Fever-related tests conducted on 44 affected students returned normal results. Their blood samples have been sent for further detailed laboratory investigations.

A special medical camp was organised on Friday (November 6, 2026) with specialists in General Medicine and Paediatrics. Based on clinical examinations, doctors suspect that the fever cases could be associated with viral infections following the recent cyclone. The affected students are being provided with appropriate treatment, and their health conditions are being closely monitored. The medical camp will continue to ensure timely healthcare.

Water samples sent for testing

Meanwhile, water samples were collected from three different sources at the hostel and sent for laboratory examination. Officials from the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Department also collected additional samples on Friday.

The hostel has two RO water purification plants, of which one is currently undergoing repairs. Meanwhile, students are being provided with boiled and cooled drinking water. Officials reported that the kitchen and hostel surroundings were being maintained hygienically. Water quality test results were also reported to be normal.

The State Health Department has directed medical officers and healthcare personnel to maintain continuous surveillance of fever cases in all residential schools across the district and conduct medical examinations wherever necessary.

Minister Satya Kumar Yadav instructed officials to ensure uninterrupted medical services for the affected students. Director Venkataramana said that specialists were examining the students, providing necessary treatment, and continuously monitoring their health. He assured that the special medical camp would continue and all necessary healthcare facilities would be made available to the students.
