Tension flared at the MPTC and ZPTC nomination centre at SR Puram in Gangadhara Nellore Assembly constituency in Chittoor district on Thursday, when two groups reportedly clashed in front of District Collector Sumit Kumar and Superintendent of Police (SP) Tushar Dudi, prompting the police to resort to a lathi charge.
The incident reportedly occurred when the two senior officials were inspecting the nomination process and reviewing security arrangements, at which point members from two groups rushed to the spot and began arguing with one another. As the two groups refused to back down, the SP himself swung into action with a lathi, directing the police to disperse the gathering.
The lathi charge sent people running in different directions, triggering brief chaos around the nomination centre.
Meanwhile, the Chittoor Urban police detained YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) constituency in-charge M. Vijayananda Reddy at his house, as part of the precautionary measures for the smooth conduct of the nomination process for the MPTC and ZPTC here.
