T.K. Noushad, former MLA, inaugurating a protest march taken out by the All India Lawyers Union at Palakkad on Wednesday.
Palakkad will launch a Jantar Mantar Protest Corner near PMG Higher Secondary School on College Road on Friday, as part of a nationwide protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the alleged deletion of nearly 14 crore voters from electoral rolls.
Writer N.S. Madhavan will inaugurate the protest at 4 pm. The venue will host evening programmes featuring protest songs, dance performances and short speeches.
An organising committee comprising social, cultural and mass organisations has been formed to coordinate the programmes.
Writers and cultural figures, including Alankode Leelakrishnan, K.R. Meera, Vaishakhan, Mundur Sethumadhavan and P.N. Gopikrishnan, along with elected representatives and student and youth leaders, are expected to participate on subsequent days.
As part of the protests, the All India Lawyers Union (AILU) organised a march in Palakkad on Wednesday against what it described as threats to the Constitution and the removal of voters from electoral rolls.
The march began from the District Court complex and concluded at Anjuvilakku, with participants carrying copies of the Constitution and reading its Preamble.
AILU district president and former MLA T.K. Noushad inaugurated the march. State joint secretary Vinod Kayanad and Gayathri addressed the gathering.
Unit secretary A.V. Arun welcomed the participants. Unit president S. Siddharthan presided. District joint secretary Jinju Jose proposed a vote of thanks.
The organisers of the Jantar Mantar Protest Corner have called on people from all sections of society to join the movement to defend Indian democracy, setting aside party-political differences.
