Ahead of National Legal Services Day, observed across India on November 9 (Monday), awareness programmes were organised in Nellore and Kadapa by the respective District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) centres to encourage free legal aid, legal awareness, and equal access to justice for all citizens. Rallies and other events will be conducted in both districts on Monday.
Nellore District Principal Judge and DLSA Chairman A. Narasimha Murthy, in a press release, said that certain cases could be resolved expeditiously through mediation, which would also result in significant time savings. “The DLSA has recently conducted an awareness programme on mediation to focus on selected cases currently pending in various courts across the district,” he informed.
Similarly, a legal literacy programme was organised by S. Baba Fakruddin, Secretary-cum-Senior Civil Judge of the DLSA, Kadapa.
Kadapa District Principal and Sessions Judge and DLSA Chairman G. Rama Gopal explained, “With the objective of making legal services more accessible to the public, individuals from within the villages are being appointed as community mediators.” “Minor disputes, family issues, land-related conflicts, property disagreements, and other social problems arising among people in rural areas can be resolved amicably through mutual discussion, awareness, and reconciliation,” the DLSA chief said.
Community mediation offers an opportunity to settle disputes at the local level, without the need to approach the courts, which not only saves time and money but also fosters friendly relationships and social unity among the people.
The public was encouraged to make use of community mediation services. Awareness was also created regarding the legal services helpline number 15100.
