A low-pressure area over the south Andaman Sea is likely to concentrate into a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal around October 31 and move west-northwestwards towards the Andhra Pradesh coast during the following two days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said.
P.L.N. Murthy, Head of the Cyclone Warning Centre (CWC), Visakhapatnam, said the system was yet to be declared a depression, and whether it would intensify further has to be watched. The remnant of very severe cyclonic storm Arnab, now a low-pressure area over north Chhattisgarh, no longer affects the State, he said.
Parts of the coastal districts received heavy rain on Friday. Until 6 p.m., Nagaram in Konaseema district recorded 91.5 mm, Tanuku in West Godavari 81.2 mm, Chodavaram in Anakapalli 80.2 mm, Velangi in Kakinada 76.9 mm, and Machilipatnam in Krishna 76.7 mm, according to the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA). Mamidikuduru in Konaseema received 54.2 mm, and Devarapalli in Anakapalli 52.5 mm.
APSDMA Managing Director Prakhar Jain said light to moderate rain was likely at places in south coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema for three days. On Sunday and Monday, moderate rain is expected at isolated places in East Godavari, West Godavari, Eluru, Krishna, NTR, Guntur, Bapatla, Palnadu, Markapuram, Prakasam, and Nellore. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea.
The CWC has forecast heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places in NTR, Krishna, Guntur, Palnadu, and Bapatla districts on November 2, and in West Godavari, Eluru, and Prakasam as well on November 3. Squally weather is likely along and off the coast from November 1, with winds reaching 55 kmph, gusting to 65 kmph, on November 2.
Maximum temperatures recorded on Friday were above normal in Rayalaseema and along the southern coast. Anantapur recorded the highest maximum of 37°C, followed by Nellore at 36.7°C, Visakhapatnam at 29.6°C, and Amaravati at 34.5°C.
An inter-ministerial Central team led by Chittaranjan Dash, Joint Secretary, Union Home Ministry, will assess the damage done by Cyclone Arnab in Konaseema, East Godavari, Kakinada, and West Godavari on Saturday and Sunday, Mr. Jain said.
Another team led by Chinmay Gotmare, Joint Secretary, Union Agriculture Ministry, will review kharif drought conditions in Sri Sathya Sai, Anantapur, Kurnool, and Nandyal on Monday and Tuesday. The State has declared 283 mandals as severely drought-affected and 105 as moderately drought-affected.
The teams are likely to meet Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Monday and Wednesday, respectively.
