Thrissur MLA, Rajan J. Pallan has urged Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala to order a comprehensive reinvestigation into the disruption of Thrissur Pooram in 2024, alleging that the actual culprits had not been identified.
The 2024 festival was thrown into disarray following what Mr. Pallan described as unilateral and unnecessary restrictions imposed by the police, which caused hardship to festival organisers and pooram enthusiasts. The restrictions, allegedly imposed deliberately, and a subsequent lathi-charge disrupted key rituals and triggered widespread protests. The then Chief Minister later ordered an inquiry into the incident.
According to media reports, the Crime Branch special investigation team submitted its report in February this year. Mr. Pallan said he understood that senior police officers had been given a clean chit, while the Thiruvambady Devaswom had been placed in the dock. He also expressed concern over the serious allegations reportedly levelled against the Devaswom.
Videos of a senior police officer confronting Pooram organisers, including during the Kudamattam ceremony, had been aired by the media, he pointed out.
Mr. Pallan dismissed allegations that the Thiruvambady Devaswom had failed in its responsibility to conduct the festival, describing them as contrary to the facts.
In this context, he called for a comprehensive reinvestigation to establish who was actually responsible for disrupting the festival and ensure that those accountable were identified.
