Excise officials have arrested a 50-year-old man after seizing 39,000 packets of banned tobacco products from his premises at Kothakulam in Valapad here.
The arrested person has been identified as Jaleel of Kothakulam, Valapad.
The seizure was made during a search conducted by an Excise team at his house based on a tip-off received by C.D. Kaladas, Thrissur Intelligence Excise Inspector. The contraband was stored in 52 sacks in the rear of a pickup van parked in the house compound.
The raid was conducted as part of the special enforcement drive, Operation Toofan. According to the Excise department, the tobacco products had been stockpiled for distribution to school students and retail vendors.
The Valapad police have registered a case against the accused under various provisions of law. He is reportedly an accused in 11 criminal cases.
