Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday (November 6, 2026) handed over keys to 557 flats in the BDD Chawl redevelopment project at Mumbai’s Lower Parel, marking the first phase of rehabilitation at the site, saying “Do not sell the home”.

The 557 families received 500 sq. ft homes in the three rehabilitation buildings constructed under the N. M. Joshi Marg BDD chawl redevelopment by MHADA. “We aspired to give residents of the BDD chawls, who lived for generations in 160 sq. ft. homes, a 500 sq. ft. home in a high-rise building under the BDD chawl redevelopment. That dream is now becoming reality,” Mr. Fadnavis added.

Mr. Fadnavis also directed MHADA to complete the rehabilitation of all BDD residents by 2030 at an event organised at Yashwantrao Chavan Centre in the presence of Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar.

This was the third distribution under the BDD Chawl redevelopment project, where 15,593 residents are being rehabilitated. The rehabilitation of the BDD chawls residents has been allocated at three locations: N. M. Joshi Marg, Naigaon and Worli. As the first-phase buildings are completed, possession of the homes is being handed over to eligible residents.

MHADA Vice President Sanjeev Jaiswal said, “The possession of 3,933 homes has been handed over so far. N. M. Joshi Marg chawl project will be completed in December 2029, the Naigaon project by December 2029 as well, and the Worli project by June 2030.”

Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde stated that residents are being given good facilities under this redevelopment and that all facilities will continue to be provided.

Homes for BMC workers

At the same event, the project of 140 flats was inaugurated for sanitation workers at Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) under the Ashray Yojana Cell, Phase 2, at Panchsheel Nagar, Colaba.

Mr. Fadnavis said, “The two schemes, the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Shramsafalya and Valmiki Housing schemes, have been started for sanitation workers and passed on to the worker’s son as he takes up the job in his place. Service quarters will be made available to sanitation workers by 2028.”

The pre-fab technology was used for the first time in building constructed by a Municipal Corporation.

“The sanitation workers clean the roads and safeguard the health of Mumbaikars. During the Covid period, they served without caring for their own lives. The first phase of the initiative to provide service quarters to the BMC’s 29,000 sanitation workers has begun. The 146 staff colonies will be redeveloped in phases, a 300 sq. ft. home has been given instead of a 150 sq. ft. home.”

Speaker Rahul Narwekar said, “The fulfilment of the dream homes for Mumbai’s 29,000 sanitation workers has begun with the key distribution of 140 flats at Panchsheel Nagar.”

Under Ashray Yojana 30 colonies are being redeveloped in three phases. A total of 12,144 homes will be provided: 11,371 homes of 300 sq. ft. and 773 homes of 600 sq. ft. Service quarters will be made available to all 29,000 sanitation workers of the BMC.
