The State government aims to ensure international-standard employment opportunities and courses in the animal husbandry sector, Minister for Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development Bindu Krishna has said. She was inaugurating the renovated rabies diagnostic centre and women’s hostels at the Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (KVASU) in Pookode.
The Minister said significant changes had taken place in the animal husbandry sector in keeping with advances in modern science. “The government will take the lead in promoting research that benefits the public through the integrated courses to be introduced at the university,” said Ms. Krishna.
She said universities were essential for nurturing an educated generation equipped with practical knowledge. “The government will extend full support to the development activities of KVASU and the progress of its students. It was a matter of pride that graduates of the university are serving as prominent scientists in different parts of the world,” the Minister added.
Ms. Krishna urged students to strongly oppose drug abuse on campuses and in society. Every student should have the conviction to spread the message of ‘Say No to Drugs’. Special importance should also be given to the mental health of students and the provision of counselling facilities, alongside academic development, she said.
The rabies diagnostic centre was renovated under the 2025-26 plan scheme, with the installation of equipment, including a fluorescent microscope. The renovated laboratory would strengthen coordinated animal health and public health initiatives in north Keralam.
Two hostels have been constructed on the veterinary campus using funds from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and the university’s own funds to address the shortage of accommodation for women students. The hostels have a total of 43 rooms.
KVASU Vice-Chancellor K.S. Anil presided.
