A five-year-old girl, A. Dhanyasri, enrolled at an Anganwadi centre in Tekulapalli of Khammam Urban mandal, died while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Hyderabad on Monday night following a suspected insect bite.

According to sources, the girl reportedly developed swelling and itching at the Anganwadi centre on Monday.

After being alerted by the Anganwadi worker over phone, her parents rushed her to a hospital in Khammam. As her condition deteriorated, she was shifted to Hyderabad, where she died during treatment.

The bereaved family members alleged negligence and a delay in informing them about her condition, citing ‘inadequate’ supervision at the centre.

On Tuesday, the girl’s parents and leaders of various student and other organisations staged a dharna on the bypass road in Khammam.

During the dharna, student activists demanded a thorough inquiry, action against the staff concerned if any lapses were established, and justice for the bereaved family.
