Farmers should adapt their cultivation practices to changing agricultural conditions and explore alternative crops and allied agricultural activities that require less water, lower investment and reduced labour while offering better income opportunities, Chairman and Managing Director of the Southern Power Distribution Company of Telangana Ltd (TGSPDCL) Jitesh V. Patil has said.

Referring to the impact of El Nino, the CMD advised farmers to explore modern and water-efficient cultivation practices suited to the local conditions. He assured that the power utility would continue its efforts to provide improved electricity supply and services to the farming community.

Accompanied by Director of the Discom V. Shivaji (Projects & IT), the CMD went on surprise field visits to Rayikal, Vityala and Rameshwaram villages in Shadnagar Division of Rangareddy district on Sunday.

The CMD suggested cultivation of leafy vegetables, drumstick, various vegetables and flowers on small plots of one or two guntas as well as on one or two acres of land. He interacted with the Research and Development (R&D) team of Kheyti, which operates in the Shadnagar region and promotes climate-smart agriculture for smallholder farmers, to understand innovative agricultural practices suited to small landholdings.

During the field visit, he inspected the functioning of distribution transformers supplying agricultural services. He discussed the reasons behind recurring transformer failures, problems affecting electrical lines and the technical measures required to improve the quality and reliability of power supply.
