The State Election Commission (SEC) has made arrangements for counting of votes in 577 Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituencies (ZPTCs) and 7,707 Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituencies (MPTCs) on Saturday, November 7. Elections to these rural local bodies were conducted on November 5.
The TDP-led alliance has decimated the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) in the recent Urban Local Body (ULB) elections, with the TDP and Jana Sena Party (JSP) winning 10 and 2 Mayor seats respectively. The YSRCP won just one Mayor seat, and its performance in the elections to Municipalities and Nagar Panchayats was also dismal.
State Election Commissioner Anil Chandra Punetha said in a press release that the notification for conduct of the second ordinary elections to ZPTCs and MPTCs was issued on October 19. As per the original schedule, the polling was scheduled to be held on November 3 and re-polling, if any, the next day (November 4). The counting of votes and declaration of results was scheduled for November 5.
However, due to the change in ULB election schedule in pursuance of the Supreme Court orders dated October 21, the Commission had to reschedule the date of polling for ZPTCs and MPTCs from November 3 to 5 and the repolling was rescheduled from November 4 to 6. Consequently, the counting of votes and declaration of results was postponed from November 5 to 7.
The SEC had declared 77 ZPTCs and 2,051 MPTCs as unanimously elected. Polling for the remaining ZPTCs and MPTCs (577 and 7,707 respectively) was held on November 5. The final polling percentage was 70.72, a 9.81% increase over the 60.91% recorded in the 2021 elections.
Counting will be taken up in 365 centres across the State, for which about 11,002 counting supervisors and 28,692 assistants / staff have been deployed. The process will begin with the counting of postal ballot papers.
About 19,885 police officers of various capacities (135 DSPs / Addl. SPs, 572 CIs/RIs, 1,412 SIs/RSIs, 3,996 ARSIs/ASIs/HCs/ARHCs, 10,881 PCs/ARPCs, 2,889 HGs) were put on counting duty as part of three-layer security. CCTV cameras, drones and body-worn cameras were set up in sensitive areas.
