The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) on Tuesday appealed to voters to elect the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and Communist Party of India (CPI) candidates in the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation elections scheduled to be held on November 1.

Addressing a press conference in the city, CITU State president Ch. Narsingarao, State secretary R.K.S.V. Kumar and municipal workers’ federation leader P. Venkata Reddy said that the coalition government was pursuing “anti-worker and anti-people” policies. They claimed Visakhapatnam Steel Plant had paid ₹58,000 crore in taxes, of which ₹7,000 crore went to the State, and demanded a halt to its privatisation. They alleged that the property tax order, outsourcing and proposed data centres would hurt workers and worsen water scarcity.

The leaders backed 14 CPI(M) candidates, six CPI nominees, an independent in Ward 119 and Aam Aadmi Party nominees.
