Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay virtually inaugurated a fire station in Odugathur town at the foothills of Jawadhu Hills on Wednesday.
Officials of the Fire and Rescue Services said that prior to the opening of the building, the fire station was functioning on the premises of the Government Veterinary Clinic in the town for nearly three decades.
Collector P.S. Leela Alex inspected the new fire station building in the presence of S. Vadivel, District Fire Officer. “A permanent building for the fire station was a long-standing demand. The new building has modern facilities and vast space to accommodate vehicles, including a fire tender,” P. Baskar, Station Fire Officer, Odugathur, told The Hindu.
Divided into officers’ quarters and the fire station, the new building was built at a cost of ₹1.35 crore on a 2.5-acre plot by the Tamil Nadu Police Housing Corporation Limited with a large training ground for firefighters. It comprises six rooms for leading firefighters. Two large overhead tanks on its terrace have a capacity of 50,000 litres of water each. The new facility also has a 40-feet-deep farm well to pump water to these tanks.
Officials said that a proposal to construct a permanent building was sent to the State government more than two decades ago. However, the administrative order for the new building was given only in 2011. Tenders were floated for the work in 2022. Work was started in the following year.
The Odugathur fire office caters to at least 60 tribal villages in the region.
