The University of Calicut is planning to undertake a comprehensive overhaul of its undergraduate and postgraduate curricula by incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) and foundational computing knowledge.

According to official sources, these academic changes are in view of the rapid shifts in the global job market and the growing trend of students migrating abroad for higher education.

Addressing an expert committee meeting on ‘New generation programmes and curriculum strategy’ on Thursday, Vice-Chancellor (V-C) P. Raveendran said that the reforms would be implemented using the existing infrastructure of the university, and that they would not alter the current workload of teachers.

He said that the changes would be implemented only after receiving approval from bodies such as the Syndicate and the academic council. The expert committee is led by K. George Thomas, a former professor at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Thiruvananthapuram.

Mr. Thomas said that the curriculum revision would be carried out while strictly adhering to the regulations and frameworks established by national and State-level academic bodies, including the Kerala State Higher Education Council, University Grants Commission, All-India Council for Technical Education, and the National Council for Teacher Education. Massive Open Online Courses would be introduced in Malayalam and English to provide students access to technical education without imposing an additional workload on teachers.

Pro Vice-Chancellor P. Rasheed Ahammed said that the initiative was part of the expansion of new-generation academic programmes. He said that a repository of new courses, prepared by the expert committee, would be published by next month, which would enable the affiliated colleges to evaluate and select courses suitable for them.

The meeting was attended by Syndicate members T.M. Vasudevan, and A.K. Shahina Mol, K.P. Soman, Dean, School of Artificial Intelligence, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, and N. Mohammadali, Director, College Development Council, among others.
