The State government has decided to implement bilingual (English and Kannada medium) classes, starting from Class 1 in all government schools across the State from the 2027-28 academic year.
Speaking at a high-level meeting of industrialists and CEOs on ‘CSR Partnerships in Karnataka’s Education System’, at the Vidhana Soudha recently, Minister for School Education and Literacy Madhu Bangarappa announced that, to ensure quality education, the State government has taken steps to introduce bilingual classes in government schools, and student enrolment in these classes has been encouraging. “Therefore, bilingual classes will be implemented in all government schools across the State from the next academic year,” he said.
Further, he said that there was a proposal to introduce bilingual classes in all schools across the State from the current academic year. “But teachers require specific training to conduct bilingual classes. Furthermore, steps have been initiated to recruit approximately 10,000 teachers for government schools, a process expected to be completed within three to four months. These new teachers along with the existing staff will be trained, and bilingual classes will be launched in all government schools from the next academic year,” he added.
9,522 Bilingual schools
Currently, there are 46,757 government primary and high schools operating across the State, with approximately 43 lakh students enrolled in them.
LKG and UKG (pre-school) classes have been introduced in about 7,500 government schools. Furthermore, bilingual classes for classes 1 to 5 have been initiated in a total of 9,522 government schools.
“Previously, children were not being enrolled in government schools because LKG and UKG classes were unavailable; instead, parents were opting to enroll their children in private schools. Therefore, our government has prioritised the introduction of LKG and UKG classes. Last year, LKG and UKG classes were launched in 1,008 government schools across the Kalyana Karnataka region. Within just 42 days, 48,000 students were enrolled in these classes,” said Mr. Bangarappa.
