West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from the Debra constituency, Subhashis Om, has alleged that he was assaulted by his own party workers on Monday night (November 2, 2026). He was assaulted for allegedly opposing extortion and was hospitalised after sustaining multiple injuries during the scuffle.

The legislator has named at least six people in his handwritten police complaint filed at the local Debra Police Station in Paschim Midnapore district.

The MLA was initially admitted to a local hospital in Debra after he sustained injuries to his limbs and head. He was later shifted to the Medinipur District Hospital for better treatment.

“Our government has zero tolerance towards extortion; respecting that stance, I tried to go forward, but I realised the extortion did not stop and the racket was going on with help from the district leadership,” Mr. Om told reporters from the hospital while he was undergoing treatment.

He added that the people who attacked him were BJP workers and that some of them had “joined the party” after May 4, once the party came to power in the State. Mr. Om said that when he protested against the extortion issues, he was attacked. He also said that four-five people who were with him were also attacked.

Tanmoy Das, BJP district chairperson, said that he does not know about the allegations of extortion by any party workers. “When I came to the hospital, all of them (who were allegedly assaulted) were doing fine, but when the reporters came, they started to get extra medical care. This is not right,” Mr Das said. He added that if there was any internal issue, it should have been discussed internally and not put out in public.

“Such an incident where BJP people are physically assaulting their own MLA tells you a lot about the poor condition of their party,” Mamata-Trinamool MLA said reacting to this development.

During the Legislative Assembly election campaigning, one of the major campaign promises by the BJP was that they would put an end to the extortion and the syndicate culture promoted by the Trinamool Congress.

BJP in-fighting

A week back, on October 26, two BJP MLAs, Kaustav Bagchi and Minister Arjun Singh, got into a feud after Mr. Bagchi threatened self-immolation if Trinamool Congress leaders were included in the BJP camp by Mr. Singh.

Meanwhile, Mr. Singh dismissed Mr. Bagchi’s criticism and said that he has been in politics for a long time and knows how politics is done. A few days later on October 30, Mr. Bagchi was faced with “Go Back” slogans inside Mr. Singh’s constituency.

A clash also erupted between two factions of the BJP in the Titagarh area of North 24 Parganas district on October 30. A BJP worker was severely injured in the clashes that erupted during a public event.
