Andhra Pradesh Congress president Y.S. Sharmila has alleged large-scale intimidation, coercion and electoral malpractice in the recently concluded urban local body elections, saying that the victories of the ruling alliance parties did not reflect the people’s mandate.
In a statement posted on X on Wednesday (November 4, 2026), Ms. Sharmila questioned the credibility of the election process, alleging that the ruling TDP-led alliance had declared itself victorious without respecting the people’s choice. She questioned the relevance of electoral transparency, free and fair elections and democratic accountability under the prevailing circumstances.
@INC_Andhra

Accusing the ruling alliance of misusing official machinery, bringing the Election Commission under its influence and using the police force to suppress the Opposition, she said that the victories of the TDP, the Jana Sena Party and the BJP were the result of authoritarian conduct and the suppression of democratic voices rather than genuine public support.
Describing the alleged practices as a serious threat to the survival of democracy and an indication of the destruction of institutional independence, she said the right to vote was a fundamental democratic entitlement guaranteed by the Constitution.
Ms. Sharmila said the ruling alliance should be ashamed of bringing disrepute to Andhra Pradesh at the national level through its alleged handling of the elections. She urged people to recognise the dangers posed by such practices to democratic institutions and electoral integrity.
