This morning radio broadcasters including RTÉ and Newstalk were interrupted and staff forced to evacuate after these and other media organisations received bomb threats via email.

Thirty aircraft and several airports across Europe were impacted by threats earlier this week, and on Friday there was a new wave of bomb threats with multiple flights to and from Lisbon, Rome, Prague and Sofia targeted.

On Monday, several branches of SuperValu were hit with an expensive and disruptive cyberattack, something supermarkets across Europe were also grappling with.

Analysts have labelled this level of disruption and chaos following anonymous threats as a classic example of hybrid warfare.

But who is doing it? Russia, for many, is the obvious suspect. Could the threats this week have anything to do with the EU leaders’ meeting set for Dublin next week? And how prepared are we to combat this new type of co-ordinated attack?

Dr Edward Burke, a military and security expert at UCD, explains.
