Sir, – Séamas O’Reilly’s (“I stopped going to Mass 22 years ago,” October 28th) tongue-in-cheek comment about Protestants that “some form of belief in a literal God was still considered fairly mandatory – discounting Anglicans” has a venerable pedigree.
It may be apocryphal, but a late 19th-century Church of Ireland dean of St Patrick’s Cathedral is credited with saying this about a parishioner: “He has no religion, but in every other respect is an out-and-out Protestant.” – Yours, etc,
IAN D’ALTON,
Naas,
Co Kildare.
