Taoiseach Micheál Martin will lay a wreath at the war memorial in Enninskillen to mark Remembrance Sunday

Taoiseach Micheál Martin will lay a laurel wreath at the war memorial in Enniskillen in Co Fermanagh this morning as part of Remembrance Sunday events taking place across the UK.

The ceremony in Enniskillen also remembers the 12 people killed in an IRA bomb attack on the Remembrance event in the town in 1987.

It comes as Sinn Féin deputy leader and Northern Ireland's First Minister Michelle O’Neill will not attend the ceremony at the Cenotaph in Belfast this year because the DUP has blocked her from acting in an official capacity as part of its response to the Orange Order’s Drumcree parade dispute.

Sinn Féin Lord Mayor of Belfast, Rois-Maire Donnelly, will take part in the Remembrance ceremony and lay a wreath.

Michelle O’Neill laid a laurel wreath at the Cenotaph in Belfast for the past two years but won’t do so this year because it was a joint invitation along with deputy first minister Emma Little Pengelly of the DUP and her party has banned any joint engagements.

The DUP took the action in response to the First Minister’s participation in an unlawful protest that blocked the proposed route of an Orange Order parade along the Garvaghy Road in Portadown on the last Sunday in September.

In a statement, the party said lawmakers cannot be lawbreakers and that breaching Stormont’s ministerial code must carry consequences.

Michelle O'Neill criticised the move, saying Remembrance Sunday "should be above this kind of nonsense".
