The RSA wanted to roll out breathalysers in pubs and hotels (file image)

A plan by the Road Safety Authority (RSA) to install breathalysers in pubs and hotels nationwide has been stood down.

It is understood the decision follows ministerial intervention.

Minister of State with Responsibility for Road Safety Seán Canney welcomed the news.

He said the concept of putting breathalysers in pubs and hotels was at odds with the Government's message that it is never safe to drink and drive.

Minister Canney added: "I welcome the decision not to proceed with this procurement process. It is the right decision."

The RSA had argued that the initiative would challenge the significant gap between how impaired people believe they are and their actual alcohol level.

It said it was not suggesting that any amount of alcohol is safe before driving.
